Located in Braemar, the town famous for the annual Highland Games, the Fife Arms caused somewhat of a stir in the hotel world when it opened in 2018 and rightly so.

If you’re looking for minimalism then this is not for you. The Fife Arms is a full on celebration of Scottish craftsmanship and every nook and cranny is filled with art, whimsical curios and taxidermy. This is a hotel with a real sense of place and a character all of its own.

We visited in the winter so the roaring fires were a welcome addition especially after enjoying a walk in the surrounding Cairngorms National Park. With 46 individually designed luxury bedrooms there is something to suit all tastes and the luxury amenities you would expect are all present. I particularly loved the house tartan designed by Araminta Campbell and seen around the hotel, from the throws on the bed to the staff uniforms.

Dining is either a more formal affair in the Clunie dining room where breakfast is also taken or the more casual option, The Flying Stag. I preferred the latter, good food in easy surroundings priced to suit both locals and guests alike. The small but perfectly formed spa is a lovely way to spend the afternoon and I thoroughly enjoyed a full body massage. As always, a property is nothing without a good team and here you’ll find happy, friendly and warm staff with good service to match.

It was owners, Hauser and Wirth’s wish to create a truly exceptional hotel and in my opinion they have succeeded with flying colours. Bravo!
